What are Preqin Indices?

Preqin Indices are reporting-grade reference benchmarks. Built on complete daily cash-flows with quarterly NAV's and a frozen methodology, they provide consistent, reliable metrics for policy benchmarking, institutional reporting, asset allocation, and risk analysis.

Preqin's Indices offer additional currency denominations, along with Time-Weighted returns (Modified Dietz with geometrically linked quarters) and Money Weighted (Horizon IRR) from the same unified data-set.

These indices replace our ‘Legacy’ indices that have been in place on Pro prior to 2nd July 2026.

Where can I find Preqin Indices on Pro?

You can find Preqin Indices under our 'Benchmarks & Indices' section on the top navigation.

You can then 'Browse' Indices, or 'Compare' Indices

Browse Indices

Fund Level Indices

Browse Indices allows you to take a deeper dive into a specific index, understanding key metrics such as fund coverage and index weightings - across both the entire index and as of the most recently reported quarter.

Using the ‘View Preqin Indices (Legacy)’ toggle, you can view the Indices that were previously available prior to 2nd July 2026.

Once you’ve decided which Indices you’re interested in viewing, you can click into the relevant Index to narrow down your requirements. Here, you can toggle between both Time-Weighted Returns (for example, to compare against other indices) and Horizon IRRs.

You can also adjust by Currency (USD, GBP, EUR & JPY currently supported)

Should you wish to select multiple Indices to view side by side, you can use Compare Indices (Below)

Asset Level Indices

Using the ‘toggle’ above the filters, you can switch between ‘Fund level’ and ‘Asset level indices’. If you have access to Private Credit data, you will be able to view our Private Credit BDC Loan Indices

Compare Indices

Compare Indices allows you to view chosen Indices side-by-side, along with adjusting the 'Rebase' date to your chosen quarter.

Underneath the chart, you will be able to view Performance (Cumulative/Annualized) & Risk (Standard Deviation) metrics across your chosen Indices, as of the most recent reporting quarter.

What are the differences between our Preqin Indices and 'Legacy' Preqin Indices?

Our search now combines both our historical 'Legacy' Indices (That users have historically been viewing), alongside our new closed-end Indices.

For our most recently released Indices, more information on our methodology can be found in our Closed-End Fund Index Methodology here - you can also find this when clicking into an individual index, in the top-right corner. This will also include information on our new Horizon IRR returns found within the Indices.

For our 'Legacy' indices (i.e. those with 'Legacy' in their title), you'll be able to find our methodology available here

The key differences between our Preqin Indices and 'Legacy' indices can be summarised in the table below:

What level of customisation is available in the Preqin Indices?

At this stage, customisation of our Preqin Indices to create blended/composite benchmarks is unavailable. Pro users can access returns data for individual indices, export these figures and create blended benchmark returns by multiplying chosen weights to each index return.

Bespoke indices (such as by Vintage, Industry & Fund Size) aren't available for Preqin Indices.

Customisations by Vintage, Geography, Strategy are only available via our 'Legacy' Preqin indices. If you require this, please reach out to our client services team at [email protected] (or via chat) and we will be able to review the request and whether it can be serviced.

Why are new Preqin Indices IRR and Time-Weighted Return very similar over 3, 6, and 12-month periods?

There are four main reasons for this:

  • Highly diversified benchmarks: With a large number of constituent funds, timing effects largely net out.

  • NAV dominance over short periods: Beginning and ending NAVs dominate quarterly cash flows, meaning both methods effectively measure the same performance.

  • Longer horizons show greater divergence: Over 1, 3, 5, and 10 years, differences increase as TWR compounds quarterly returns: IRR reflects cash‑flow timing over the full horizon

  • In smaller or narrower cohorts, differences between TWR and IRR are more pronounced due to lower diversification.

Why does index capitalization decline over time for some cohorts?

While cumulative capitalization continues to grow, capitalization across specific vintage years may fluctuate due to private market dynamics, including:

  • Fundraising cycles

  • Macroeconomic conditions

  • Market opportunity shifts

How does the Preqin Indices account for currency conversion?

For our Preqin Indices, currency conversion is applied at the point of the cash transaction for both capital calls and distributions

FX rates are sourced from LSEG, using the WMR 4PM daily FX spot rate

How long will 'Legacy' Preqin Indices be available?

The 'Legacy' Preqin Indices will be available until around April 2027, after which our enhanced Preqin Indices will be the standard to use. This is in line with our commitment for a representative, consistent, reliable and replicable index; to support our customers in their aims of policy benchmarking, strategic asset allocation, portfolio monitoring, performance comparisons and market analysis.

Can I compare Preqin Indices to other Public Indices?

Yes, via 'Compare Indices', you can compare Preqin Indices against Public Market Indices, as well as other Preqin Index Products.

Preqin's Indices are exportable. If your desired index isn't available, you will need to navigate to the specific Index provider to retrieve their figures.

Our Indices data is also available via our Enterprise Data Solutions (Feeds). Please reach out to our team via chat (or [email protected]) if you are looking to explore regular exporting of bulk indices into your internal systems (to compare against other indices).
