Historical Fundraising Explained
Historical Fundraising Explained
To find top level fundraising statistics for your given Private Capital strategy (Private Equity, Venture Capital, Private Debt, Real Estate, Infrastructure, Natural Resources) the Historical Fundraising will be the best place.
The chart shows the number of funds closed and aggregate capital raised (in USD bn) of closed-ended, commingled (pooled) funds that reached a final close within a given year (depending on the filters that a user selects). You can also view the average fund size of funds closed within that year.
If you're looking for a quick snapshot of fundraising across all Private Capital asset classes, you can view this via the Private Capital Breakdown charts page.
The aggregate capital raised value will reflect the final close size of the fund - we would be unable to break down this value to cumulative amounts per year.
We don’t currently provide historical fundraising statistics for open-ended funds.

If you'd like to customise your fundraising dataset further than what is available via the charts, these can be identified in one of two ways:
For a specific Final Close Year, selecting the hyperlink where the number of funds for that year are populated will transfer you to a pre-filtered fund’s advanced search
If you’d like a list/bulk view across all years within your historical fundraising search, you will need to go to the Funds Advanced search and select the following criteria:
Fund Type & Status Filter > Closed-Ended
Fund Type & Status Filter > Commingled
More Filters > Final Close Date > select desired close date range
Prior to exporting the data set, users may need to import columns into their dataset to be able to run the split of data they need. Use the 'Manage Columns' section (highlighted above) to select key datapoints for your fundraising analysis
You can then export the dataset into excel and aggregate your figures within a pivot table.

By Asset Class/Strategy
Use the Strategy Matrix.xlsx to view Asset Class and Strategy Mappings
By Fund Focus
Fund focus represents where the majority of Capital (>50%) will be deployed from the fund.
For Regional splits by fund focus (North America, Europe, Asia etc), use the Primary Region Focus column
For Country Focused funds, use the Geographic Focus column
You can find these via 'Manage Columns'
Buyout Fund size:
Small-Mega boundaries are available via the ‘Buyout Fund Size’ column within 'Investment Strategy'
Note: Buyout Fund Size will only populate against funds with a Final Close Size value
Other fund size groupings:
Use the values within ‘Final Close Size (mn USD)’ to create a separate column with the range grouping required
Continuation Funds:
Use the Continuation Fund filter prior to exporting, or add in the ‘continuation fund’ column (which will return a yes/no value) - this column can be found within 'Fundamentals' > 'Closed End Fund Details'
First-time Funds:
Use the ‘Manager Experience > 1st Fund’ filter prior to exporting, or add the ‘Fund Number (Overall)’ into your data set via manage columns within 'Fundamentals' > 'Closed End Fund Details'
Sector:
Each fund will have a Core Industry/Primary Sector associated if a large proportion of the funds capital will be deployed within a given sector. Where this isn’t confirmed/clear, thy will be listed as ‘Diversified’. These will vary by asset class:
For Private Equity, Venture Capital, or Private Debt funds – use the Core Industries column. Please note that in some cases, there will be more than one Core Industry associate with a fund – we don’t track % splits of core strategies
For Real estate, use ‘RE: Primary property type’
For infrastructure, use INF: Primary Industry
For Natural Resources, use ‘NR: Primary Natural resources strategy’
RMB denominated funds:
Add in the Fund Currency column and group RMB funds to ‘Yes’ and others to ‘No’. This column will be found within 'Fundamentals' > 'Fundamentals'
